Improvement Concept for the “Lakeland Without Barriers” Eco-Trail

About the Project

Smolensk Lakeland National Park is committed to creating a welcoming environment for every visitor. Previously, some areas were inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. To address this, we developed an improvement concept for the “Lakeland Without Barriers” eco-trail, ensuring safe and comfortable access throughout the park.

What We Did

Working closely with a local initiative group of people with reduced mobility, our team created an inclusive design concept. The project includes architectural solutions for scenic viewpoints and interactive educational sites, alongside with a unique system of information stands and themed photo zones.

  • Crafted route-use scenarios tailored to diverse visitor needs.

  • Arranged a decking system with integrated ramps for effortless movement.

  • Designed landscape elements and installations that reflect the character of the National Park.

  • Organised scenic viewpoints, rest areas, and a parking zone.

Design Solutions

The circular lakeside trail is one of the most popular routes in the National Park. We adapted it for full wheelchair accessibility. Its layout, gradients, and surface materials were planned to accommodate people with reduced mobility, allowing everyone to move easily, enjoy the scenery, and discover fascinating facts about the local flora and fauna.

The eco-trail and surrounding areas are thoughtfully zoned to make every visit as comfortable as possible. Seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure, the route strengthens connectivity between zones and enriches the overall user experience.

Gradients and path configuration along the route are calculated to prevent wheelchairs from rolling unintentionally. A variety of surfaces — wood decking and natural ground — are used to enrich the tactile and visual experience.

The existing trail was extended to include a pontoon dock, providing a peaceful place to rest and observe nature by the water.

Interpretive displays are installed at entry points, scenic overlooks, and rest areas to enhance the educational aspect of the walk. A series of “Lakeland Animals” landscape design elements and a set of themed installations were developed for placement along the trail.

All solutions align with the National Park Landscape Improvement Manual and implemented by the Park's own team.
