Improvement Concept for the Przewalski Horse Observation Area in Smolensk Lakeland

About the Project

The open enclosure with Przewalski's horses is one of the most popular attractions in Smolensk Lakeland National Park. Proper upkeep and visitor interaction with the animals require specialized facilities: safe infrastructure, comfortable pathways, and designated observation areas.

What We Did

We developed an improvement concept for the Przewalski’s horse observation area that prioritises the safety and comfort of both visitors and the animals.

  • Created usage scenarios for the space in front of the enclosure.

  • Organised a wooden deck with ramps to allow easy and unobstructed movement.

  • Designed unique small architectural forms and installations themed around the area's inhabitants.

  • Arranged rest zones and provided parking spaces.

Design Solutions

The horse viewing area features a circular route within a compact space. We redesigned the traffic flow to ensure safe access while eliminating chaotic parking. The spatial solutions are tailored for visitors with limited mobility, taking into account the challenging terrain and minimizing the impact on the natural landscape.

The entrance area in front of the enclosure and the viewing platform is equipped with information panels featuring a park map and educational materials. The signage helps visitors navigate the area more easily and encourages interest in observing the animals.

The horse interaction area is now accessible to all visitor categories. Ramps and decking enable users with limited mobility to safely approach the enclosures.

The observation area has gained an additional educational function: informational panels present the characteristics of Przewalski's horses in an interactive format, making the viewing experience more engaging.

All design solutions have been implemented by the park staff and align with the principles outlined in the landscaping guidelines.
